Barry Martindale has joined the team at Amethyst

Amethyst are delighted to announce that Barry Martindale B.Sc.(hons) (formerly of both Aluminium and Electro Inductors) has joined the team at Amethyst.

Barry is an Electrical Engineering graduate with over 45 years' experience in the design of windings, inductors and transformers.

Particular area of specialisms are high frequency high power transformers, air cored windings up to 2500 Amps continuous and high frequency current flow in windings and conductors.

Examples of past designs include the following:

  • Air cored inductors and windings up to 600kg in weight, wound with aluminium and copper foil, enamelled copper and aluminium strips, round wire (including litz wire)
  • Water cooled windings (including water cooled litz wire)
  • High current powder iron cored inductors.
  • Transformers and iron cored inductors, including making and testing high frequency transformers up to 40kVA continuous (designs to 90kVA) typically for traction applications.
  • Inrush current limiting inductors for power factor correction capacitor banks up to 25kV system voltage and 500 Amps.
  • Pulse shaping inductors for pulsed power laser power supplies.
  • Superconductor windings.
  • Expertise in analysing current distribution at high frequencies (skin effect, proximity effect) enhanced by in-house multi frequency inductance analysers and special modelling techniques.


Amethyst Designs' acquisition of Aluminium Inductors and Electro Inductors

We are delighted to announce that Amethyst Designs Limited has recently completed the acquisition of both Aluminium Inductors Limited and Electro Inductors Limited.

Both companies have been re-located to our Bar Hill facility with the Croydon facility closing at the end of January.  Barry Martindale, MD of both companies, will be working with the staff at Amethyst to ensure continuity during this transitional period.  Existing orders will be invoiced by either Aluminium or Electro Inductors, new orders invoiced by Amethyst.

These acquisitions will enhance Amethyst’s reputation as one of the UK’s leading companies in the design and manufacturer of Transformers and Wound Components – further details of our products and services can be found on our web site.

Amethyst Designs Celebrates 35 Years in Business

On the 7th July 2017 we formally celebrated 35 years of trading.  Founded by John Anderson and Pat Sheridan, we are now firmly established as one of the leading companies within the UK transformer industry.

Employing 30 staff at our modern facility just outside Cambridge, we have built an excellent reputation for service and quality.

In recent times we have been able to expand our product range through acquisitions and employment of key personnel from within the industry, and are now able to offer offshore manufacture.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their loyalty, our suppliers for their continued support and finally our colleagues here at Amethyst for continually ensuring that high standards of quality and service are achieved.

We continue to move forward, taking on new challenges and achieving new goals, using our experience and excellent service, ensuring many more successful years to come.

Further Success for Amethyst's Design Engineer Ian Blunsten

Amethyst's Design Engineer Ian Blunsten has represented Over carpet bowls club since it was formed some 20 years ago in the East Cambs league.  Over successfully defended their league and cup titles in 2011/2012 and Ian himself won the East Cambs league singles and rinks titles in 2012 along with qualifying for the pairs to represent East Cambs at the county finals.

He went on to win  the Cambridgeshire pairs title with Amy Folkes and followed this by winning the Eastern counties and English Champion of Champions competitions for 2012.

Ian has represented the county for the last 15 years at carpet bowls and was part of the successful county team that retained their title at the English national championships at Potters, also wining the Eastern counties Teambowl competition for 2012.

He has qualified to represent the county team again this year and they are currently in third place of the Eastern counties league after two games of the 2012/2013 season.


Zeta Windings products will now be manufactured by Amethyst Designs Limited

We are writing to all our Zeta customers to advise that with effect from the 1st January 2013 all Zeta Windings products will be manufactured and invoiced by our associated company Amethyst Designs Limited.

This will considerably improve and streamline our administration process as well as enhancing the range of products and services we are able to offer to all existing Zeta customers.

Paul Wealleans Appointed Chairman of the ICWA

We are delighted to announce that Paul Wealleans, Amethyst’s Operations Director, has recently been appointed as Chairman of The International Coil Winding Association (ICWA). The ICWA is the only UK based Trade Association dedicated to the promotion of the Wound Component industry.

The objectives of the Association include being a proactive, non-profit making trade association for the benefit of our members, promoting the Coil Winding industry and its members by means of exhibitions, trade fairs and conventions, and acting on behalf of its members to communicate and negotiate with Government Departments assisting in international trade.

They also co-operate with National Standards organisations to help formulate International / European Standards allied to the coil winding industry, and give members advice on technical, sourcing, marketing and exporting issues.
