Amethyst (Aluminium Inductors) specialises in windings and air cored inductors using aluminium foil.
Advantages are no saturation (with no magnetic core), ease of winding for high currents (5 to 1000 Amps continuous), and half the weight of copper for the same resistance.
Foil windings are excellent at handling high voltage pulses, and are usually much better than strip windings at higher frequencies (guidance can be supplied).
Example items manufactured are:-
- Air and Iron cored inductors for power electronics, especially traction and naval applications.
- Inrush limiting inductors for capacitor banks up to 24kV system voltage (higher for specials) and pulse shaping inductors for laser power supplies.
- Magnet coils up to 100kg in weight.
- Litz windings in copper or aluminium, including water cooled, Q up to 1000.
- "Air" cored inductors with a powder iron centre core, giving double the power for the same size and improved HF performance.
- High Power High Frequency ferrite transformers produced up to 40kVA continuous.
- High Power High Frequency amorphous (nanocrystalline) core transformer designs to 1 MVA.
